Transformative Ocean Sciences for implementing the Ocean Pact

The aim of this questionnaire is to collect views of ocean scientists, students, and professionals about challenges and priority actions to support Transformative Ocean Science for the implementation of the European Ocean Pact. The questionnaire also seeks to identify the main knowledge gaps in current ocean science and observation systems, and to better understand their underlying structural and systemic causes in relation to the challenges associated with implementing the Ocean Pact.

The results of the questionnaire will inform the collaborative work carried out in the context of the International Symposium on Transformative Ocean Science, held in Venice on 24-27 March, 2026, and will contribute to the drafting of a policy brief for decision-makers.

The questionnaire is anonymous. All information provided will be handled in full compliance with European and Italian data protection and privacy regulations. The data will be used exclusively for scientific and policy-oriented purposes and will be published only in aggregated and anonymized form. By completing the questionnaire, you agree to the privacy conditions outlined  above. If you have any questions regarding the questionnaire,  please contact Dr. Elena Gissi (elena.gissi@cnr.it).

Welcome to the survey of the International Symposium on Transformative Ocean Science.
The survey is structured into five sections reflecting the main thematic pillars of the International Symposium:

Section 1 — About you, the participant
Section 2 — Observation, exploration, and biodiversity insights for addressing knowledge gaps in Ocean Pact implementation
Section 3 — Ethics, responsibility, and transdisciplinarity in ocean science research
Section 4 — Training current and next generations of scientists for transformative ocean science
Section 5 — Identifying major gaps in ocean science and research for the implementation of the Ocean Pact

We estimate that completing the full questionnaire will take approximately 50 minutes. Your contribution is crucial to the success of the International Symposium and we sincerely thank you for your time and engagement.

IMPORTANT: You can save your progress and resume the survey at any time by selecting the "Resume later" option from the top-right menu on this page. You will be prompted to create a username and password, which you can use to save your answers and return to the survey at a later stage, even from different devices. You do not need to insert any email.

This survey is anonymous.

The record of your survey responses does not contain any identifying information about you, unless a specific survey question explicitly asked for it.

If you used an identifying access code to access this survey, please rest assured that this code will not be stored together with your responses. It is managed in a separate database and will only be updated to indicate whether you did (or did not) complete this survey. There is no way of matching identification access codes with survey responses.

Informed Consent Form of the survey for the International Symposium on Transformative Ocean Science
This informed consent form is for the respondents of the survey launched as part of  the International Symposium on Transformative Ocean Science held in Venice, Italy, on 24-27 March, 2026.
The aim of this survey is to collect views and ideas about challenges and actions to support Transformative Ocean Science for implementing the Ocean Pact. This questionnaire also aims to identify the main knowledge gaps in current ocean science research and observation, and to understand their underlying causes in relation to the challenges associated with implementing the Ocean Pact.
Information Sheet
Introduction  I am Dr. Elena Gissi, Senior Scientist at the National Research Council, Institute of Marine Sciences (CNR ISMAR). Within the International Symposium Organizing committee, I am responsible for  coordinating and delivering this survey.  This form contains important information about the reasons for undertaking this study, what you will be asked to do if you decide to participate, and how information related to you will be used.
Purpose of the research   The aim of this survey is to collect views on challenges and actions to support Transformative Ocean Science for implementing the Ocean Pact. This survey also aims to identify the main knowledge gaps in current ocean science and observation, and to understand their underlying causes. The results will be analyzed to support the drafting of a White Paper on Transformative Ocean Science for the Ocean Pact.
Type of Research Intervention. This applied research activity involves your participation in an online survey that will take approximately 50 minutes to fill in.
Participant Selection You are being invited to take part in this questionnaire because of your expertise in ocean sciences across multiple perspectives and research fields.
Voluntary Participation Your participation in this study is entirely voluntary. If you decide to take part, you can request that the information you provided not be used in the research study at any time.
Procedures You will be asked to complete an online survey.  You will not be asked to share personal beliefs, practices or experiences and you are not required to provide any information you are not comfortable sharing. Appropriate technical and organizational measures will be taken to minimize this risk, as detailed below.
Benefits There will be no direct benefit to you from participating. However,  your contribution will support reflection on how to strengthen research and education systems for Transformative Ocean Science, with potential societal benefits related to the ocean.
Reimbursements No reimbursements are foreseen for participation in this survey.
